Chitabe Camp
(5
)
Central Okavango-(Botswana)
|
Location:
Chitabe ( pronounced Chitaabee) is bordered by the Moremi Game Reserve to the north and
east and offers guests "classical Okavango" scenery.
The concessions
boundary in the east is the Gomoti Channel and the Santantadibe
River in the west. The area is made up of a superb variety of
habitats which include permanent waterways and marshlands, dry
acacia and mopane woodland, riverine areas, grasslands and seasonal
flood plains. |
 |
|
|
Accommodation:
The camp itself is situated on
one of the most beautiful islands in the Delta. Surrounded by ancient
ebony, leadwood and sausage trees, Chitabe offers 8 luxurious twin
bedded East African styled tents, built on elevated wooden decks under a
lush canopy of indigenous trees.
Each luxury tent has en-suite
facilities with hot and cold running water. A separate thatched dining
room, bar and lounge area, linked by raised walkways, offers superb
views over an open floodplain.
For groups preferring an
even smaller camp, Chitabe Trails Camp accommodates 8 guests in the same
luxurious tents, built on the ground, with en-suite bathrooms, private
dining room, bar, lounge area and pool. |
 |
|
Game Viewing / Activities:
Chitabe offers guests
game drives in open 4x4 vehicles both during the day and night, as
well as walks. The camps owners are well known in the Okavango to
Wilderness Safaris' guests who have stayed at Mombo. They are Dave
Hamman and Helene Heldring, co-authors of the critically acclaimed
book entitled "Running Wild - Dispelling the Myths of the African
Wild Dog." |
 |
|
Wild Dog Conservation Fund:
A portion of the
accommodation charges from each guest will go towards a Wild Dog
Conservation Fund which Chitabe has established. Dr. J.W. ("Tico")
McNutt began the Botswana Wild Dog Research Project in 1989.
A study
area approximately 3,000 sq. km. was established which includes an
average of 160 dogs in 10 - 12 packs. Chitabe lies within this study
area. Botswana's Wild Dog population
represents a significant portion of all Wild Dogs remaining in Africa. |
